Dehradun: Police have registered a murder case in the death of senior journalist Pankaj Mishra in the capital Dehradun. The deceased Pankaj Mishra’s younger brother, Arvind Mishra, had filed a complaint at the Rajpur police station, based on which the police registered the case. Pankaj Mishra’s post-mortem was conducted on Tuesday, but at the request of the family, a second post-mortem was conducted today, Wednesday. Meanwhile, the police have arrested the accused Amit Sehgal and his accomplice after a lengthy interrogation.
According to the complaint filed by the deceased Pankaj Mishra’s younger brother, Arvind Mishra, his elder brother Pankaj Mishra lived with his wife Lakshmi in their house in Doon Vihar Jakhan. On the night of December 15, at around 10 pm, a man named Amit Sehgal came to Pankaj Mishra’s house with some other people and started verbally abusing him and assaulting him with the intention of killing him.
Allegations of assault after entering the house: It is alleged that Amit Sehgal started kicking and punching Pankaj Mishra in the chest and stomach, causing blood to come out of Pankaj Mishra’s mouth. The young man who came with Amit Sehgal said that he is a heart and liver patient, hit him in the stomach and chest. Then Amit Sehgal said that this would be enough to finish him off. After the assault, Pankaj Mishra’s mobile phone was snatched away.
Wife Lakshmi’s mobile also snatched: It is alleged that while Pankaj’s wife was trying to inform the police using her mobile phone, Amit Sehgal and his associates snatched Lakshmi’s mobile phone, misbehaved with her, and fled from the scene. After this, Pankaj Mishra informed the police about the incident using a passerby’s phone.
Died before reaching the hospital: According to Arvind Mishra’s complaint, the police arrived at the scene and asked for a medical examination and a written complaint, but his brother Pankaj Mishra and sister-in-law Lakshmi said that due to their injuries and fear, they would not go at night but would take action in the morning. On the morning of December 16, at around 3 am, Pankaj Mishra, groaning in pain, called out to his wife saying that he was in pain. When his wife Lakshmi woke up, Pankaj had already gotten out of bed and collapsed unconscious on the floor. Neighbors were then alerted, and they used their phones to inform his family. He was then taken to Doon Hospital by ambulance, where doctors declared him dead.
Post-mortem being conducted again: The deceased Pankaj Mishra’s brother, Arvind Mishra, said that he had arrived in Dehradun from Mumbai. Upon reaching Dehradun, he met with SSP Ajay Singh and appealed for a second post-mortem examination, after which the post-mortem is being conducted again today.
Arvind Mishra alleges that given the way the post-mortem was conducted yesterday, he suspects that the accused Amit Sehgal might have tampered with the process. Because Amit Sehgal has a history of blackmailing doctors. Due to this fear, there was a possibility of manipulation in the report.
Meanwhile, SP City Pramod Kumar said that after Pankaj Mishra’s death, his brother, who had returned from Mumbai, filed a complaint with the police late at night at Rajpur police station in Dehradun. Based on this, the Rajpur police station registered a case against the accused Amit Sehgal and his associates under sections 103, 304, 333 and 352 of the BNS and started investigating the matter. The police are investigating every aspect of the case.
By late evening, based on the statements of the victim, the deceased’s wife, the landlord, and nearby witnesses, and after the investigating team inspected the crime scene and collected physical evidence, Amit Sehgal and his associate Parthosheel were arrested after questioning.
SSP Ajay Singh said that action has been taken so far based on the evidence and statements received in the case. The Cyber Cell, SOG, and Forensic team have also been deployed for a thorough investigation of the case. All aspects of the case are being investigated.
