Dehradun. A review meeting on solid waste management was held in the Secretariat auditorium under the chairmanship of Chief Secretary Anand Bardhan. Detailed discussions were held on making the waste management system in urban areas more effective and accountable.
Instructions to Improve Door-to-Door Collection and Source Segregation
The Chief Secretary directed improvements in the quality of door-to-door waste collection. He instructed effective implementation of source-level segregation of waste and necessary steps to enhance waste processing capacity. Where land is required for processing plants, directions were given to promptly identify land and submit proposals.
Emphasis on Developing Online Tracking and Accountability Systems
The Chief Secretary directed the development of an online tracking system to ensure accountability of vehicles, drivers, and staff involved in waste collection and disposal. He also called for detailed preparation regarding the implementation of an automated system related to duty and salary.
Special Focus on Adoption of Modern Technologies
The Urban Development Department was directed to immediately provide necessary resources to local bodies lacking machinery and equipment. Emphasis was also laid on adopting modern and effective technologies prevalent in solid waste management and preparing a concrete action plan for their implementation.
Trial of GPS-Based Real-Time Monitoring in Dehradun
During the meeting, Urban Development Secretary Nitesh Jha informed that a trial of real-time monitoring of door-to-door waste collection is underway in Dehradun. Through a GPS-based online system, officials will be able to monitor vehicles. Citizens will also be able to check the location and arrival time of waste collection vehicles and register complaints online. Information was also shared about the early launch of this system. Senior officials of the concerned departments were present at the meeting.
