Dehradun: Uttarakhand’s capital Dehradun has once again received a District Magistrate who is known not just as an administrative officer, but as a ground-level “field officer.” IAS officer Ashish Chauhan of the 2012 batch has assumed charge as the District Magistrate of Dehradun. Soon after taking charge, he made it clear that his priority will not merely be clearing files from the office but reaching out to the public and resolving their problems directly.
Known for his calm, polite, and balanced working style, Ashish Chauhan is often referred to in administrative circles as “Mr. Cool.” Due to his dynamic work style, friendly nature, and seriousness towards duty, he enjoys popularity among both the public and government employees. This is why he became a favorite officer wherever he served.
After assuming charge as Dehradun DM, Ashish Chauhan said that the Chief Minister has set clear priorities regarding the Char Dham Yatra, monsoon preparedness, and speedy resolution of public grievances. He said that areas such as Rishikesh and Vikasnagar are major transit points for the Char Dham Yatra, and therefore ensuring better facilities for pilgrims, traffic management, and healthcare services will be the administration’s first responsibility.
He said that disaster management preparations would be strengthened further this year in view of the monsoon. Special focus will be placed on monitoring sensitive areas, ensuring availability of relief resources, and completing tasks within timelines. He also clearly stated that unnecessary pendency in administration would not be allowed and public issues would be resolved promptly.
Ashish Chauhan, who completed his B.Tech in Computer Science from IIT Kanpur, secured 89th rank in the UPSC examination and entered the IAS service. Before joining civil services, he worked in the corporate sector, but his desire to work for society and the hill regions brought him into administration.
One of Ashish Chauhan’s biggest strengths has been his field-based working style. While serving as DM of Uttarkashi, he used to organize public meetings in remote villages every Saturday to listen to people’s grievances. Sitting among villagers and issuing directions to officials on the spot was a key part of his administrative style. This is why people see him as an “officer of the people.”
He is not only known for his soft-spoken image but also for taking strict decisions when necessary. While serving as DM of Pithoragarh, he conducted a surprise inspection of the district hospital at 6 AM and, upon finding 11 doctors absent, immediately suspended all of them. He also played an important role in exposing the fake COVID test racket during the 2021 Kumbh in Haridwar.
Ashish Chauhan’s work in disaster management has also been widely appreciated. From the 2013 Kedarnath disaster to the 2023 Joshimath land subsidence crisis, he remained active on the ground. During the Joshimath crisis, he stayed at the site for several hours continuously and led relief and rehabilitation operations.
While serving as DM of Uttarkashi, he launched the “Apple Festival,” giving a new identity to apples from the Harsil Valley. Similarly, in Chamoli he introduced the “Him Prahari App,” and in Pithoragarh he connected local youth with employment and self-employment opportunities through border empowerment campaigns.
Dehradun continues to struggle with issues such as traffic congestion, waterlogging, illegal construction, and increasing urban pressure. In such circumstances, people hope that Ashish Chauhan’s ground-oriented and field-based administrative style can bring a fresh change to the capital’s governance system.
