CM Takes Major Decision: Tree Felling for Dehradun–Rishikesh Four/Six-Lane Project Put on Hold; Says Work Will Not Proceed Until Consensus Is Reached

Dehradun: “Over the past few days, I have taken serious note of the concerns and suggestions expressed by many citizens, environmentalists, and local residents regarding the Dehradun–Rishikesh four/six-lane project. This is an important infrastructure project of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), and work was being carried out in compliance with the directions of the Hon’ble High Court, along with all required statutory and environmental approvals and procedures.

Keeping wildlife conservation in mind, the project includes the construction of an approximately 3.5-kilometre-long elephant underpass as well as special culverts for the movement of smaller wildlife. These measures are intended to help reduce human-wildlife conflict and incidents of wildlife fatalities caused by road accidents, which are frequently reported along this route. Development is essential for us, but no decision will be taken by disregarding public sentiment, environmental concerns, or local interests. With this objective, I have directed the Principal Secretary and the concerned officials to hold fresh and detailed consultations with all stakeholders, local residents, public representatives, and experts.

Further action will be taken with full respect for the directions and decision of the Hon’ble High Court. At the same time, until a satisfactory consensus and an atmosphere of mutual trust are established among all stakeholders, the felling of trees falling within the scope of this project will remain suspended.”
