Dehradun: The Uttarakhand government is preparing to develop government properties located at prime locations through private participation. Under the plan, efforts are underway to redevelop Hotel Alaknanda in Haridwar and the Public Works Department guest house in Rishikesh as modern hotels.
The government is preparing to develop Hotel Alaknanda in Haridwar under a public-private partnership. It believes that better utilization of the commercial potential of the property’s prime location can provide modern facilities to tourists while also increasing government revenue.
The PWD guest house in Rishikesh has also been proposed for development as a four-star or higher-category hotel through private participation. A hotel with at least 100 rooms is proposed, with an investment of more than ₹100 crore expected.
The government has already approved five such guest houses for private participation. These include guest houses in Rishikesh, Uttarkashi, Dungalbitta, Ranikhet and Harsil. Around 12 additional guest houses have also been identified for potential private investment, considering their low revenue generation and tourism potential.
The government plans to transform these properties into modern tourism facilities by leveraging private-sector expertise and investment. The process of finalizing the selection of private partners, eligibility criteria and investment framework is currently underway.
In addition, there are plans to develop large and high-end hotels in Chakrata, Ramgarh, Champawat and Pithoragarh. The Uttarakhand Investment and Infrastructure Development Board is preparing an action plan for this purpose. The government aims to expand tourism facilities through private investment while also increasing state revenue.
