Almora: Amid the growing challenges of climate change, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami called upon farmers to pledge the protection of soil, agriculture, and natural resources while addressing the state-level “Khet Bachao Abhiyan” (Save the Fields Campaign) held at Hawalbagh. He said the campaign has evolved beyond a government initiative and has now become a people’s movement driven by public participation.
The Chief Minister emphasized that farmers are not only food providers but also the backbone of the nation. Referring to India’s cultural traditions, he said soil is revered as a mother, making it essential to preserve the fertility of agricultural land and adopt sustainable farming practices.
Government Focused on Increasing Farmers’ Income
CM Dhami stated that the state budget has earmarked ₹200 crore for measures aimed at increasing farmers’ income. He urged farmers to undertake regular soil testing, conserve water, and follow scientific agricultural practices. He also stressed the importance of selecting crops suited to changing climatic conditions.
He highlighted that the state government is actively promoting polyhouses, horticulture, cold storage facilities, mega food parks, and aromatic crops. Currently, aromatic crop cultivation is being encouraged across nearly 23,000 hectares in Uttarakhand. Millet-based farming is also being promoted, and farmers are receiving direct benefits through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system.
