Dehradun: Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has, for the first time, responded to speculation about early Assembly elections in Uttarakhand, stating that there is currently no official information or preparation regarding such a move. He said reports suggesting early elections are merely speculation.
Speaking to journalists during an event in Dehradun on Thursday, the Chief Minister was asked whether Assembly elections could be held before the scheduled time. In response, he said the government has received no indication at any level that early elections are being considered.
He clarified that neither any formal communication has been received nor is any preparation underway for advancing the election schedule. He added that whenever the Election Commission decides to conduct elections, the government and all political parties will abide by its directions.
Speculation had recently intensified in political circles in Uttarakhand and neighbouring Uttar Pradesh that the Assembly elections could be advanced from 2027 to the end of 2026. Frequent visits by senior leaders of the BJP and Congress, the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, the proposed Haridwar Kumbh, and the upcoming Census had fuelled these discussions.
However, following the Chief Minister’s statement, the speculation has, for the time being, come to an end. The current Uttarakhand Assembly’s term is scheduled to continue until 23 March 2027, and elections remain slated for early 2027, with no official indication of an earlier poll.
