Dehradun: Former Director General of Police (DGP) of Uttarakhand, Ashok Kumar, will resign from his position as Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Haryana Sports University following directions from the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The court instructed him to step down within three weeks while directing the university to initiate a fresh selection process.
Ashok Kumar’s appointment post-retirement was challenged in court by Dr. D.S. Mor (Devendra Singh Mor) and another petitioner, claiming that the appointment violated established norms and contesting the pay-fixation letter.
During the hearing, the High Court emphasized that VC appointments must strictly comply with the UGC 2018 Regulations, referencing the Supreme Court’s 2026 judgment in Dr. S. Mohan v. Secretary to Chancellor, Puducherry Technological University & Ors.
As per court directions, Ashok Kumar must resign within three weeks, and the senior-most Dean will temporarily assume the charge of Vice-Chancellor until the process is completed by October 31.
In response, Ashok Kumar stated that he had already decided to step down earlier due to personal and family reasons to spend more time with his family and had informed the state government. He noted that his original tenure was scheduled until December 2025.
