Dehradun: Taking a strict stance in view of increasing traffic pressure in Dehradun, Chief Secretary Anand Bardhan has issued key directives. During a meeting on the Dehradun Mobility Plan held at the Secretariat on Friday, he gave several important instructions to upgrade the city’s traffic system.
The Chief Secretary stated that traffic pressure will rise significantly after the completion of the Delhi–Dehradun Economic Corridor, especially during weekends and the Char Dham Yatra. In such a situation, it is essential to prepare an effective traffic plan in time. He directed officials to formulate a comprehensive plan at the earliest considering the growing traffic load.
Strict directions were also given regarding the redevelopment of Arhat Bazaar. The Chief Secretary instructed that the registry process be completed by May 15, 2026, and that demolition work be initiated thereafter. He also directed the formation of a site selection committee to expedite the operationalization of Niranjanpur Mandi.
To address parking issues in the city, officials were directed to prepare DPRs and feasibility reports for underground parking near the Secretariat and Parade Ground at the earliest. Additionally, instructions were given to speed up improvement works at various junctions, including Kargi Chowk.
Emphasizing the need to strengthen public transport, the Chief Secretary directed the Transport Department to deploy 100 new buses on the roads by September. The police department was instructed to take strict action against illegal parking, keep left turns free, and ensure strict enforcement of traffic rules.
He also directed measures to curb accidents caused by overspeeding, including installation of speed breakers, proper signage, and increased monitoring through ANPR cameras. Furthermore, officials were asked to ensure optimal utilization of existing parking facilities in the city.
The Chief Secretary also instructed that works related to UPCL and gas pipelines be completed within the stipulated timeline, emphasizing that better coordination among departments is essential for improving traffic management. The meeting was attended by the District Magistrate, SSP, and other senior officials from various departments.
