Dehradun: The first meeting of the Coordination and Policy Planning Council with Himalayan states was held at the Chief Minister’s residence under the chairmanship of Pushkar Singh Dhami. The meeting involved extensive discussions on resolving shared challenges and formulating an integrated development strategy.
Chief Minister Dhami stated that the geographical, environmental, and social conditions of Himalayan states are similar, and therefore, effective policy-making is possible through mutual cooperation, exchange of experiences, and adoption of best practices. He emphasized that the main objective is to improve the quality of human life while maintaining a balance between economy and ecology.
During the meeting, detailed discussions were held on important issues such as climate change, disaster management, tourism, biodiversity conservation, rejuvenation of water sources, and development of border areas. The Chief Minister said that with the support of institutions working in the fields of the Himalayas and environmental conservation, the state will move forward toward new opportunities.
Anand Bardhan highlighted the need for integrated efforts to address the challenges faced by Himalayan states, while Kishore Upadhyay stressed the importance of in-depth scientific and ecological studies of Himalayan regions.
Suggestions were also presented regarding the formation of a joint task force for Himalayan states, conservation of alpine meadows (bugyals), promotion of a herb-based economy, livelihood enhancement, and preservation of natural and cultural heritage. The Chief Minister stated that the suggestions received during the meeting would be implemented swiftly.
Dhami added that coordination among Himalayan states is not only about development but is also linked to environmental security and the interests of future generations, making shared policies and collective efforts the need of the hour.
