Madurai: The Tamil Nadu government has appointed three senior IAS officers as Special Duty Officers to coordinate preparations for the upcoming consecration ceremony at the Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple in Madurai.
The move is aimed at ensuring effective coordination among various government departments and strengthening security, traffic and civic arrangements ahead of the major religious event.
The officers assigned to oversee the preparations are:
- K. Veera Raghava Rao (IAS: 2007: TN) — Secretary, Labour Welfare and Skill Development Department.
- P. Madhusudan Reddy (IAS: 2011: TN) — Director of Municipal Administration.
- C. Palani (IAS: 2013: TN) — Director of Employment and Training.
Focus on Coordination and Safety
The three officers will work closely with the district administration and other government departments to ensure that preparations for the consecration ceremony are completed in a timely manner.
Key areas of focus include:
- Crowd management and public safety
- Inter-departmental coordination
- Municipal and civic arrangements
- Traffic and movement management
- Facilities for devotees and visitors
The deployment comes as Madurai prepares for a significant influx of devotees for the temple ceremony. Authorities are expected to coordinate security arrangements, traffic regulation and essential civic services around the temple complex and adjoining areas.
Background: Senior Officers Bring Administrative Experience
K. Veera Raghava Rao
- Veera Raghava Rao is a 2007-batch IAS officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre. He is currently serving as Secretary to the Government of Tamil Nadu in the Labour Welfare and Skill Development Department, a position he has held since July 2024.
Rao has held several administrative positions during his career. He has also served as Commissioner of Technical Education and previously worked in district administration, including as District Collector of Madurai.
His previous experience in Madurai’s administration is considered particularly relevant to his present assignment overseeing preparations for the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple consecration.
P. Madhusudhan Reddy
- Madhusudhan Reddy is a 2011-batch Tamil Nadu cadre IAS officer currently serving as Director of Municipal Administration, Tamil Nadu.
The Directorate of Municipal Administration is responsible for coordinating and supervising municipal corporations and municipalities across the state, except the Greater Chennai Corporation.
Before taking charge as Director of Municipal Administration in June 2025, Reddy served as Director of Survey and Settlement. He was appointed to his present post during a major reshuffle of Tamil Nadu IAS officers in June 2025.
In his current role, he oversees matters relating to urban local bodies, including municipal administration and the implementation of various urban development programmes. He is also an ex-officio member of the Tamil Nadu Seventh State Finance Commission in his capacity as Director of Municipal Administration.
C. Palani
Dr C. Palani, IAS, is a Tamil Nadu-cadre officer with a background in veterinary science. Government records and the Tamil Nadu Directorate of Employment and Training identify him as the Director of Employment and Training, where he oversees the state’s employment and skill-training administration.
The Directorate of Employment and Training functions under the Tamil Nadu government and is responsible for employment-related services, career guidance and vocational training through employment exchanges and government Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) across the state.
Before taking charge as Director of Employment and Training, Palani served in the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department as Additional Commissioner (Administration). He was subsequently appointed Director of Employment and Training as part of an administrative reshuffle.
Palani holds a Master of Veterinary Science (M.V.Sc.) degree and has experience in district administration as well as departments dealing with religious endowments, employment and training.
Dedicated Administrative Mechanism for Consecration
The appointment of the three officers is intended to create a dedicated administrative mechanism for monitoring preparations, coordinating with various departments and resolving issues that may arise ahead of the consecration ceremony.
The Tamil Nadu administration is working to ensure that the event is conducted smoothly while managing the large number of devotees expected to visit Madurai and maintaining adequate security, traffic and civic arrangements around the temple complex.
