Dehradun: The Uttarakhand government is preparing to introduce a new policy aimed at addressing the shortage of doctors in the state. Under the proposed policy, doctors graduating with an MBBS degree from government medical colleges will be required to complete three years of government service before becoming eligible to pursue postgraduate (PG) medical education.
The Health Department has prepared a proposal in this regard and submitted it to the government. It is expected to be placed before the Cabinet for approval soon.
According to the department, many MBBS doctors currently apply for postgraduate studies shortly after joining government service, resulting in an acute shortage of doctors in government hospitals, particularly in remote and hilly areas.
Director General of Health, Dr. Sunita Tamta, said that under the proposed policy, MBBS graduates joining government service must serve for at least three years before being permitted to pursue PG studies.
The department believes the move will ensure that doctors graduating from government medical colleges continue serving the state for a longer period, thereby strengthening healthcare services in remote and mountainous regions. The proposal is expected to be implemented after Cabinet approval.
