Dehradun: Garvita Bhakuni from Almora has been selected to represent Uttarakhand at the prestigious ‘At Home’ Reception to be hosted at Rashtrapati Bhavan on August 15, marking India’s Independence Day. She is among five Young Aapda Mitra (Disaster Friend) NCC cadets selected from across the country for the event.
Garvita is a National Cadet Corps (NCC) Young Aapda Mitra Cadet. One cadet each from Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, and Nagaland has also been selected to attend the ceremony.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami congratulated Garvita, saying that her achievement reflects the spirit of service, discipline, and commitment of Uttarakhand’s youth towards disaster management. He added that trained young volunteers play a crucial role in rescue and relief operations during disasters, and the state government is continuously working to involve more youth in the disaster management system.
Secretary, Disaster Management and Rehabilitation, Vinod Kumar Suman, said that under the Young Aapda Mitra Scheme, implemented with the support of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), 4,310 young volunteers are being trained in Uttarakhand. Of these, nearly 2,700 volunteers have already received training in search and rescue, first aid, evacuation, emergency response, and disaster risk reduction.
Expressing her happiness, Garvita Bhakuni said that representing Uttarakhand at Rashtrapati Bhavan is a matter of great pride for her. She added that the training she received as a Young Aapda Mitra has inspired her to serve society, and she will continue to work with dedication in the field of disaster management and public service in the future.
