Government on alert over heatwave; ‘Water Bell’ to ring in every school in Uttarakhand

Dehradun: In view of rising temperatures and a possible heatwave in Uttarakhand, the government has taken a major decision. A ‘Water Bell’ will now be rung at regular intervals in all schools across the state to remind students to drink water and prevent dehydration. This directive was issued by Chief Secretary Anand Bardhan during a review meeting on summer preparedness.

He also instructed changes in school timings, better ventilation in classrooms, and ensuring availability of ORS and essential medicines. Emphasis was laid on spreading awareness among students about heatwave precautions.

District Magistrates have been directed to temporarily halt construction work in water-scarce areas and ensure the availability of clean drinking water at bus stands, markets, and public places.

Heatwave action plan in every district

The Chief Secretary said all departments must work in coordination from the state to village level. Each district will prepare a heatwave action plan, identify vulnerable areas, and maintain special monitoring. Instructions were also given to operate 24×7 control rooms.

Health services on alert mode

Hospitals have been instructed to ensure sufficient beds, medicines, ORS, and ice packs for heatwave patients. Ambulances must also be equipped with necessary facilities, and medical staff should be trained.

Special arrangements for workers and public

For laborers working outdoors, changes in working hours, shaded rest areas, drinking water, and first aid facilities will be ensured. Cooling spaces and public water booths will also be set up.

Focus on electricity and water supply

Uninterrupted power supply has been directed to meet rising demand during summer. Alternative water supply arrangements, including tankers, must be ensured in water-scarce areas.

The government has made it clear that protecting the public—especially children and vulnerable groups—will be the top priority during the summer season.
