Dehradun: Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami is set to complete five consecutive years in office on July 4, 2026. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the state government are preparing special events to mark the occasion. The BJP plans to project the milestone as a significant political achievement in Uttarakhand, while the Congress has criticized the proposed celebrations and questioned the government’s performance.
Since the formation of Uttarakhand, only former Chief Minister Narayan Dutt Tiwari had completed a full five-year term. He served continuously from March 2, 2002, to March 7, 2007, holding office for 1,831 days. Pushkar Singh Dhami took oath as Chief Minister on July 4, 2021, and is now close to surpassing Tiwari’s record for the longest tenure.
BJP State President Mahendra Bhatt announced that a week-long series of events will be organized across the state to celebrate the completion of Chief Minister Dhami’s five years in office. The party will soon release a detailed programme. According to him, the campaign aims to highlight the achievements and work of the BJP government.
BJP leaders stated that, just as nationwide programmes were organized after Prime Minister Narendra Modi surpassed former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s record for the longest continuous tenure, similar events would be held to commemorate Chief Minister Dhami’s five years in office and his approach toward setting a new state record.
The Congress, however, criticized the BJP’s plans. State Congress Vice President Suryakant Dhasmana said that instead of celebrating five years in office, the BJP should present an account of its entire tenure before the people. He alleged that the government should also explain its record on issues such as land, mining, paper leak scandals, crimes against women, migration, and other key concerns.
While the BJP is preparing to project Chief Minister Dhami’s tenure as a political achievement, the Congress views the occasion as an opportunity to question the government’s policies and performance. As a result, political activity in Uttarakhand is expected to intensify during the first week of July.
