Dehradun: The Uttarakhand Government is preparing to establish the Uttarakhand Sanskrit Commission to promote the preservation, development, and modern use of the Sanskrit language in the state. To make the Commission comprehensive and effective, the government has invited suggestions from Sanskrit scholars, teachers, researchers, universities, gurukuls, Sanskrit institutions, and Sanskrit enthusiasts. Interested individuals and institutions may submit their suggestions via email by August 10, 2026.
Sanskrit Education Secretary Deepak Kumar said that Uttarakhand became the first state in the country to grant Sanskrit the status of the state’s second official language in 2010. He added that during the International Sanskrit Conference held in Haridwar in December 2025, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami emphasised the need for establishing a high-level Sanskrit Commission for the preservation and effective implementation of Sanskrit. Subsequently, the process of constituting the Commission was advanced during a high-level meeting held at the Secretariat on July 15, 2026.
The proposed Commission will work on Sanskrit education, research, preservation and digitisation of ancient manuscripts, the Indian knowledge tradition, Vedic and classical studies, Sanskrit-based skill development, and employment opportunities. It will also formulate long-term policies and action plans to promote the use of Sanskrit in administration, technical fields, artificial intelligence (AI), and digital platforms.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that Sanskrit holds a special place in the cultural and spiritual heritage of Devbhoomi Uttarakhand. He said that Sanskrit is not merely a language but the foundation of India’s knowledge tradition and cultural heritage. The state government, he added, is making continuous efforts to take Sanskrit to the masses and give it a renewed identity suited to the modern era.
