Dehradun: Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has directed that Pravasi Panchayats (migrant Uttarakhand residents’ forums) be organized in all districts to promote reverse migration in the state’s hill regions. During a meeting of the Rural Development and Migration Commission at the Chief Minister’s residence on Friday, he emphasized sharing the experiences of migrants from Uttarakhand and addressing their concerns.
During the meeting, Commission Vice Chairman S. S. Negi informed the Chief Minister that Pravasi Panchayats have already been organized in Tehri, Almora, Champawat, Pithoragarh and Pauri. Pravasi Panchayats will be organized in Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag and Chamoli in September.
CM Dhami directed officials to prepare an effective action plan based on the suggestions made by the commission. He said all departments should make coordinated efforts through their respective schemes to promote reverse migration in the hill regions and ensure that the benefits of government schemes reach the village level.
The Chief Minister said local resources, traditional knowledge and skills should be linked with employment to provide young people with livelihood opportunities in their own villages. Special attention should also be given to improving the quality and branding of local products and providing them with better market access.
He said reverse migration cannot be achieved merely by providing employment. It will require the development of better livelihoods, facilities and new opportunities in villages.
