Dehradun: To ensure adequate availability of sugar in the market and prevent hoarding, the Uttarakhand government has imposed a stock limit on large wholesale buyers. Major buyers will now be allowed to keep a maximum of 15 days’ worth of sugar stock according to their requirements. Action will be taken if stocks exceeding this limit are found.
Following directions from the Central Government, the Food and Civil Supplies Department has instructed all District Supply Officers to monitor stocks and take action in accordance with the rules. The new arrangement will apply to major buyers who consume 10 metric tonnes or more of sugar per month.
The government will also monitor supplies made by sugar mills to large consumers. The quantity of sugar purchased each month and the stock available will be verified. In addition, physical inspections of warehouses will be conducted periodically at the district level.
The government believes that excessive storage of sugar can create an artificial shortage in the market, affecting prices. The objective of imposing the stock limit is therefore to maintain adequate sugar availability in the market and prevent hoarding.
Food Commissioner B. L. Rana said all District Supply Officers have been informed about the Central Government’s directions. Action will be taken against those violating the stock limit in accordance with the prescribed rules.
